Buck Martinez had a simple message about a possible MLB lockout during his Hall of Excellence day.
Don't fix what isn't broken.
That was his answer Saturday after becoming the first person inducted into the Blue Jays' newly unveiled Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre.
At 77, Martinez has spent decades connected to this organization, as a player, manager, and one of its most recognizable broadcast voices.
The current collective bargaining agreement expires after this season, and labor talks between MLB and the players' union have already stirred concerns about another work stoppage.
Martinez wasn't buying the argument that the sport needs sweeping changes right now.
"Look around and see how popular the game is," Martinez said, according to Mitch Bannon. "You have to recognize there's nothing wrong with the game; it's not broke. Don't try to fix it."
Why his comments land differently given the timing
The last lockout stretched 99 days before a new agreement got reached in March 2022, delaying spring training and pushing back Opening Day.
That memory is still fresh for a lot of fans who watched an entire offseason get consumed by labor uncertainty instead of actual baseball news.
Martinez's priority sounded straightforward. Protect what's already working, and don't let a labor dispute overshadow a sport he clearly believes is thriving.
It's a notable stance from someone who spent years as a player rep and later a vice president on the union's executive board during his playing career.
That history gives his comments a bit more weight than a typical outside opinion on labor matters.
Saturday was built to celebrate his legacy, not to preview a bargaining fight. But Martinez's answer became one of the more talked-about moments of the day regardless.
Whether his optimism holds up once real negotiations begin is a separate question entirely, one that neither side has fully tipped its hand on yet.
